Thiruvananthapuram: A group of female students from Thiruvananthapuram Medical College has made a demand to the authorities, seeking permission to wear attire in accordance with their religious dress code while working inside the operation theatre. However, medical experts and senior doctors have expressed their opposition to this demand, emphasizing the importance of strict adherence to the dress code in operation theatres to maintain infection control protocols and ensure patient safety.
In response to the students’ request, the principal of the college has taken the decision to establish a committee of experts who will thoroughly examine the matter and provide their insights. The principal has decided to form a committee of experts to examine the demand.
Based on the committee report, Medical college principal rejects the demand of Muslim female students to wear hijab in operation theatre. Principal added that the operation theater is a place that needs to be kept sterile.
Seven students belonging to Muslim community approached the MCH Principal Dr Linette J Morris on Monday requesting permission to wear long-sleeved scrub jackets and surgical hoods in operation theatres, due to religious reasons.
Dr Linette said the students were briefed on the medical aspects of the theatre dress code when they gave the complaint. “We follow an internationally accepted system. There are issues in changing it. We have to follow it because only then the patient is safe. We cannot change it offhand,” she said.
However, surgeons and infectious diseases experts vehemently opposed the demand on the change of dress code.
Indian Medical Association (IMA) also strongly opposes the demand of dress code changes and said, patient safety cannot be compromised at any cost.
