Thiruvananthapuram: Janam TV’s news report leads to the initiation of garbage removal in Amayizhanchan canal, Sreekanteswaram, Thiruvananthapuram. The canal, located near Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station, has been severely congested for years due to the accumulation of waste. The canal was once a source of drinking water and irrigation has now become a breeding ground for various infectious diseases in the city. Local residents have long been demanding the cleaning of the canal, and their concerns have been echoed by environmental activists.
In response to the situation, Janam TV aired a special news report on the issue. Following the broadcast, several higher officials, including the district collector, visited the canal and instructed the Irrigation Department to urgently address the cleaning process. Consequently, the removal of garbage has now commenced.
The renovation of the Amayizhanchan canal has been a longstanding demand of the local residents, as it serves as the largest dumping area in Thiruvananthapuram. Janam TV’s news report shed light on the government’s inadequate pre-monsoon sanitation efforts, coinciding with a rise in the number of dengue cases.
Renovating the canal will also help alleviate water logging issues in the city. Local residents have expressed concerns about contracting skin diseases due to the dumping of garbage, and there are allegations that the government is inadvertently creating a habitat for mosquitoes.
Spanning a length of 12 km, the canal starts from the Observatory Hill of the State Water Resources Department and connects to the Akkulam backwater via Kannamula.
The residents of the area are grateful to Janam TV for bringing attention to the government and corporations in the face of these epidemic-like conditions.
