Kottayam: The Kerala Congress (M), which is part of the Left Democratic Front (LDF), has decided to demand more seats for the party in the coming Lok Sabha elections. The party is eyeing Idukki and Pathanamthitta seats in addition to the party’s Kottayam seat.
The Kerala Congress (M) chief, Jose K Mani, in a meeting of the party’s Steering Committee said that he had already hinted the LDF leaders about the party’s decision. The Kerala Congress (M) has three MLAs from Pathanamthitta. It is believed that the party will leverage this to gain weight for their demand for the Pathanamthitta seat.
The CPI(M)’s evaluation is that the induction of Kerala Congress (M) into LDF had strengthened the left front. The Kerala Congress (M) is demanding more seats for the upcoming Parliament election on the basis of this positive evaluation.
The party also has considerable influence in Idukki. In the previous election, the independent candidate supported by the left front had lost Idukki by more than one lakh votes. The seat was won by Congress leader, Dean Kuriakose. Therefore, the party believes that there is nothing wrong in giving them the Idukki seat which the left could not win.
Meanwhile, the CPI(M) State Secretariat meeting is underway at the AKG Center. The meeting has decided not to discuss any controversial issues. The Lok Sabha election work will be under discussion.
The Kerala Congress (M), was earlier in the United Democratic Front (UDF) led by the Congress. However, the Kerala Congress (M) left the UDF following a split in the party and joined hands with the LDF led by the CPI(M).
