Thiruvananthapuram: In a recent debate program on Janam TV, popular Malayalam film actor and director Santhosh Pandit expressed his endorsement for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Pandit emphasized the importance of the UCC in ensuring equality across the nation. He dispelled the misconception that the UCC is a new law, stating that it is already enshrined in the Constitution of India.
Pandit pointed out that the delay in implementing the UCC can be attributed to political considerations aimed at securing vote banks, rather than addressing the need for uniformity in civil laws. The UCC, he explained, advocates for equal treatment of all citizens in matters of marriage, divorce, adoption, and property rights, without infringing upon any religious beliefs.
Highlighting the significance of implementing the UCC, Pandit stressed that it would help eradicate gender discrimination and empower women in society.
He urged everyone to refer to Article 44 of the Indian Constitution, where Dr. Ambedkar outlined the necessity of a Uniform Civil Code.
Pandit noted that opposition to the UCC often stems from religions that deny equal rights to women or favor polygamy and male dominance. He further highlighted that those who hesitate to grant women equal property rights also tend to oppose the UCC. He emphasized that the laws of India should be followed by all citizens, and the UCC should not be seen as religious imposition but rather as a means to uphold justice and equality.
