Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala continues to experience heavy rain. Red alert has been issued in Idukki, yellow alert in Kollam and Thiruvanthapuram, and orange alert in all other districts by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
As the heavy rain intensifies, four fatalities have been recorded in the cities of Palakkad, Thrissur, Pathanamthitta, and Alappuzha. A migrant worker’s body that went missing recently near the Thottappally spillway during severe weather has been found. One person went missing from Iruvanjipuzha in Kozhikode. A woman and her grandchild were swept away by flood waters at Amarambalam in Malappuram on Wednesday. Seven-member family in Thirumoolapuram in Thiruvalla were rescued by NDRF after water flooded their house.
According to the IMD, the state will see bad weather until Saturday. After a sudden whirlwind struck Irinjalakkuda near Thrissur, major damage were observed. Several trees were uprooted and electric lines snapped following this.
Two shutters of the Kalarkutty dam in Idukki were raised by 15 cm each on Wednesday. Pambla dam (lower Periyar) shutters were also opened. People who live along the banks of the Periyar and Muthirapuzha rivers have been warned. According to reports, water level is below flood warning level at Kalady, Marthandavarma and Mangalapuzha stations of Periyar river basin.
