Palakkad: Residents of Kizhakkancherry in Palakkad have raised concerns about the operation of an illegal mobile liquor shop in their locality. According to the locals, this mobile shop engages in the illegal delivery of liquor directly to customers. Furthermore, there are allegations of connivance between the mobile liquor shop operators and officials from the relevant government departments.
Despite several complaints lodged by residents, no action has been taken to address the issue. Additionally, the residents claim that it is a common occurrence for excise officials investigating the matter to accept bribes and neglect their duty. The locals suggest that the excise department could identify alcohol-selling establishments by reviewing the CCTV footage from the area. However, they are making the effort to conduct such inspections.
It has been reported that the mobile liquor shop operates from 5:30 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. During the morning hours, the primary customers are daily wage laborers heading to their plantation jobs. Subsequently, youngsters including students from schools and colleges, purchase liquor from this mobile shop.
For those unable to visit the shop directly, liquor is delivered to their doorstep at variable prices. Many young customers are not concerned about the fluctuating prices. Moreover, it is alleged that liquor sales increase significantly on dry days.
The excise department and the police are said to be aware of liquor purchases from the beverage outlets in Vadakancherry, Chitilanchery, and Chuvannamannu, according to the complaints.
