Thiruvananthapuram: A yellow alert has been issued for certain districts in the State by India Meteorological Department (IMD), even as it forecast the intensity of rainfall lashing the State to reduce from Friday onwards. Meanwhile, Kottayam’s residential areas are flooded in several places due to heavy rainfall. Kerala’s Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts have been placed on yellow alert for today.
The weather department stated that, Thiruvananthapuram is expected to experience a cloudy sky with a few spells of rain or thundershowers on Friday. Other districts including Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur and Palakkad is expected to experience light-intensity rainfall.
Meanwhile, the Manimala, Achankovil, and Pamba rivers in Kerala overflowed due to the three days of continuous rainfall, flooding the low-lying regions of the Alappuzha district. Homes were flooded by rain, and many families were relocated to relief camps set up by district officials. In Alappuzha, the district officials set up 17 relief camps in view of heavy rains. Five camps were opened in Chengannur taluk, two in Cherthala and a camp in Mavelikara. There are currently 11 camps operating in Chengannur, 4 in Cherthala, and 2 in Mavelikara. More than 1100 people were shifted to relief camps in three talukas of Alapuzha.
As heavy rain continued in many parts of Kerala on Wednesday, a holiday was declared for educational institutions in eleven districts of the state. Six districts of the state are on Orange Alert. The rain has caused overflowing of rivers, waterlogging and coastal erosion in many parts of the state.
Communicable diseases seems to pose a threat in the low-lying areas. The public is advised to be cautious and avoid entering polluted waters. It was advised to consume water only after boiling. Meanwhile, the cases of dengue fever and rat fever are also increasing.
