Thiruvananthapuram: The CPI(M) in a bid to attract the Muslim community is trying to cozy itself up to the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) on the issue of Uniform Civil Code (UCC). A report said that the CPI(M) State Secretary, MV Govindan, pointed out that the Muslim League is not untouchable and that the communist party will cooperate with those who are opposing the UCC.
MV Govindan also slammed the Congress party for its different stand on the UCC in different states, said the report.
The communist leader said that the cooperation with the Muslim League is issue-based and not political. He said that the Muslim League is not an untouchable party for the CPI(M). We have supported, still support and will support the correct stands taken by the League on various issues. It is the Muslim League that must decide if they want to come to the LDF, said the report.
According to the report, MV Govindan revealed that the invitation extended to the IUML regarding the UCC was not political but issue-based. He said that the UCC will affect majority of the people in India and that the CPI(M) will align with all forces that oppose the UCC.
Slamming the Congress, MV Govindan, said that their stand on the UCC is not clear. He accused the party of taking a pro-UCC stand in states like Chhattisgarh.
The CPI(M) in a bid to attract the Muslim community towards it has been wooing the Muslim League for quite some time. The communist party’s stand on many issues in Kerala clearly shows that they are desperate to get the support of the Muslim League. The CPI(M) knows that if they need to retain their power in the state, they need to get the Muslim community’s support.
