Thiruvananthapuram: An invitation by the CPI(M) extended to the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) for a seminar on Uniform Civil Code (UCC) hosted by the communist party has triggered a difference of opinion in the IUML.
IUML State General Secretary, PMA Salam, confirmed that the party has received and official invitation from the CPI(M) to attend a seminar on UCC. He said that the decision to participate in the seminar will be taken after discussion with its allies of the UDF, headed by the Congress.
PMA Salam demanded that the CPI(M)’s opposition to issues like UCC must be genuine and there must not be other agendas.
However, veteran Muslim League leader, ET Mohammed Basheer, cautioned that the CPI(M) stand is dangerous. He accused the communist party of playing dirty politics and said that the Muslim League will not fall into the trap set by CPI(M).
Meanwhile, the Samastha Kerala Jameyathul Ulama said that the organization is not aware if they are included in the Seminar Committee. Sunni leader, Mustafa Mundupara, said that he will work as per the decision of Samastha.
The Convener of the Congress-led United Democratic Front, MM Hassan, said that the Congress party will not attend the seminar even if it is invited. He also added that he does not think the Muslim League will also attend the seminar.
