Malappuram: The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) finally decided not to participate in the seminar on Uniform Civil Code (UCC) hosted by the CPI(M). The League’s decision has left the communist party shamefaced and dashed its hope to garner support among the Muslim community through the IUML.
The decision of the Muslim League came after a meeting at Panakkad. The decision not to attend the CPI(M)’s seminar was announced by IUML State President, Panakkad Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal and National General Secretary, PK Kunhalikutty MLA. They said that the party cannot move ahead ignoring the Congress. The IUML has no issues with Samastha participating in the CPI(M) seminar.
A report said that PK Kunhalikutty expressed his dissatisfaction with the CPI(M) for not inviting other parties of UDF including Congress. He said that the seminar should not be organized with the intention to divide people.
He also said that the IUML will organize a seminar under the leadership of Panakkad Sadik Ali Shihab Thangal in Kozhikode.
The meeting of the IUML leadership followed after a difference of opinion originated in the party over participating in the seminar hosted by CPI(M).
The CPI(M) had been lately trying to woo the Muslim League leadership. The communist party leadership praised the IUML for taking a strong stand on the UCC issue while criticizing the Congress party’s changing stands in other states. CPI(M) also said that IUML is not an untouchable party hinting at future alliance with the party. However, IUML leadership has maintained close ties with UDF and Congress especially.
Some within the Muslim League have expressed that the invitation by the CPI(M) should have been rejected immediately.
