THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In response to the continuous accidents in Muthalappozhi, the central government has decided to intervene and find solutions to the issue. Local residents have raised concerns about the mismanagement of the state government, which has failed to provide effective solutions to prevent these accidents.
Union Minister V. Muraleedharan has sought the assistance of the Central Fisheries Department, initiating discussions with Union Fisheries Minister Shri Parshottam Rupala. During the meeting, they explored potential solutions to the problems faced by fishermen in the area.
Criticism has been directed at the state government’s handling of a recent incident where four individuals lost their lives after a fishing boat accident in Muthalappozhi. Allegations suggest that the government’s response was inadequate.
According to a report from the fisheries department, a total of 25 people have lost their lives in accidents in the Muthalappozhi region since 2001. Furthermore, from 2011 to the present, 63 fishermen have died in the Anchuthengu to Veli areas. Fishermen in the region claim that the construction flaws in the harbor contribute to the increased frequency of accidents in Muthalappozhi.
Kerala has gained a reputation for being a place where fishermen frequently face accidents and fatalities. The neglect of Muthalappozhi’s fishermen by successive state governments has sparked strong protests. In light of this situation, the central government has made the decision to address the concerns of the local population and find a viable solution.
