Kerala state government faces severe criticism over failure in stray dog vaccination

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a concerning development, the Kerala State Animal Welfare Department has come under severe criticism for its failure to provide vaccination to the growing population of stray dogs. Despite the increasing reports of stray dog incidents, the department appears to be struggling to find a viable solution. Amidst the situation, the department engages in a blame, accusing the State Health and Sanitation Department and the local bodies of lacking cooperation.

Adding to the mounting criticism is the poor quality of the vaccinations administered to dogs, further fueling concerns among the public. Recent reports of stray dog attacks serve as clear evidence that the state government has utterly failed in its stray vaccination efforts, raising serious doubts about the efficacy of their strategies.

Moreover, allegations have surfaced suggesting that the animal welfare department is grappling with insufficient funds provided by the state government. Lack of coordination between regional animal health departments has also been identified as a significant hurdle, resulting in delays in the vaccination process. The regional office staff claims to have notified the state animal welfare department about the unavailability of vaccines, but due to inadequate funding, the department withdrew its support.

In addition, the local bodies responsible for the rabies eradication process have been accused of lacking dedication and focus. Last September, the Animal Welfare Department and local bodies collaborated on a comprehensive plan to tackle the issue of stray dogs, which included the establishment of vaccination centers across various parts of the state. But the initiative was abruptly halted.

Even in the face of confirmed deaths due to rabies, the departments involved appear to turn a blind eye, avoiding any decisive action. Despite the alarming increase in rabies-related fatalities, the departments continue to demonstrate a concerning lack of responsiveness.

These glaring failures have led to widespread allegations of negligence on the part of the state government, further exacerbating the public’s frustration and concern. Urgent measures and collaborative efforts are desperately needed to rectify this dire situation.
