THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: During a meeting with Kerala’s Members of Parliament (MPs) in preparation for the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan called for unity in opposing the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).
Stressing the need to protect the rights of minorities, Vijayan expressed concerns over the lack of proper consultation with various castes and religions, resulting in growing anxiety among religious minority communities.
The Chief Minister strongly criticized the central government for making hasty decisions regarding personal laws without adequate discussions, asserting that such an approach does not align with democratic governance. He emphasized that the UCC should not aim to instill fear and apprehension among specific minority groups, but rather prioritize the importance of respecting their religious beliefs.
Vijayan argued that implementing the UCC would undermine the country’s secular fabric and appear to be a deliberate attempt to suppress its diverse nature.
Highlighting Kerala as a model state known for its secular principles, Vijayan urged the state’s MPs to reach a unanimous decision on this matter, taking into account the sentiments and concerns of their respective constituencies.
