Little relief: KSRTC employees receive first salary installment

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In response to the ongoing severe financial crisis faced by the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), the organization has disbursed the first installment of last month’s salary to its employees. The payment was made late last night, meeting the deadline set by the government for the first installment.

Initially, KSRTC had announced that due to the financial constraints, employee salaries would be paid in three installments each month. As per the government’s assurance, the first installment was scheduled to be disbursed by the 5th of the month.

However, there was a delay in the distribution, and the first installment, which was due on the 5th, was eventually paid on the night of the 14th. This delay has raised concerns among employees, as the second installment, originally set to be paid today, is likely to be postponed as well. Consequently, it is now becoming apparent that receiving the full salary for the respective month might not be feasible.

The decision to distribute the first installment came after the employees unanimously voted to initiate a strong strike in response to the non-payment of salaries. The strike was averted when KSRTC managed to disburse the first installment last night.

In the midst of this situation, Antony Raju, the Kerala State Transport Minister, pointed out that the state’s Finance department had not approved the requested amount for employee salaries, which led to the delay in payments. The Finance department’s failure to sanction the required funds is cited as the primary reason behind the payment delay.
