Thiruvananthapuram: The BJP State President, K Surendran, criticized the CPI(M)’s seminar against Uniform Civil Code (UCC) held in Kozhikode yesterday. He dubbed the seminar as being just another communist party meeting and said that the voices of those who support the UCC were not allowed in the seminar.
The BJP leader also remarked that the seminar did not allow Muslim women to speak up in the name of personal laws.
He criticized the CPI(M) State Secretary, MV Govindan, for claiming that the Muslim League will directly participate in the seminar even when the League had informed earlier that it will not be part of the event.
Surendran added that through this, the communist party is playing vote bank politics and has dumped their erstwhile leaders like EK Nayanar and EMS and also the leftist women organization, All India Democratic Women’s Association.
The CPI(M) seminar against UCC was held yesterday at Kozhikode and was inaugurated by the CPI(M) General Secretary, Sitaram Yechury. The communist party had planned to use the seminar to make inroads into the Muslim community. They thus extended the invitation to the Indian Union Muslim League, currently in the opposition alliance. However the Muslim League declined the invitation.
The seminar saw other Muslim organizations and the Church and other Hindu community organizations sending their representatives. Representatives of political parties allied with the ruling CPI(M) also sent their representatives.
The seminar was also criticized for the total absence of women speakers from Muslim community. Muslim women were not allowed to speak because the communist party feared that the presence of Muslim women on the stage would antagonize the representatives of Muslim organizations such as Samastha present for the seminar.
