Kozhikode: CPI(M) leader, KT Kunhikannan, has slammed the pro-left writer, Khadija Mumtaz, for criticizing the party for not letting any Muslim women speak at the seminar against Uniform Civil Code (UCC). She had said that it was wrong that the communist party did not allow any woman from Muslim community to speak at the seminar.
Her personal view is that the Muslim personal laws must be reformed in such a way that it will be beneficial to women of the community.
Khadija Mumtaz also asked if the communist party’s decision not to allow Muslim women to speak on stage stems from its fear of religious leaders. She said that CPI(M) fears that it will lose support of religious and political leadership.
However, CPI(M) leader, KT Kunhikannan, said that Khadija Mumtaz’s criticism of CPI(M) comes from her ignorance. He argues that Khadija Mumtaz sees BJP’s statements without seriousness and simplifies it.
He said that during the organizing committee formation meeting, not only Mumtaz but no one else spoke. He said that during the event the stand against the UCC was put forward. It was viewed that reforms in personal laws is an issue that must be discussed within the communities and a consensus formed.
Khadija Mumtaz is a popular Malayalam writer and critic. Her 2007 novel ‘Barsa’ received the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 2010. She is a medical doctor by profession.
