Thiruvananthapuram: The family of former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has denied official honours for his funeral, which is set to take place on Thursday. The veteran Congress leader had previously expressed his wish for a simple funeral, devoid of any official honours.
Mariyamma, Chandy’s wife, has officially communicated to the Public Administration Department that religious ceremonies alone would suffice, and official honours should be abstained from during the funeral proceedings.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, however, had informed his Cabinet that Oommen Chandy should be awarded full state honours. The Chief Secretary was directed to seek the opinion of Chandy’s family in this regard. The cabinet members also extended their heartfelt condolences to the former CM’s bereaved family.
The funeral of Oommen Chandy is scheduled to commence at 3:30 p.m. at St. George Orthodox Church, Puthuppally. The funeral rites will be led by His Holiness Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, the Supreme Head of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. Additionally, a condolence meeting will be held at 5 p.m.
