Thiruvananthapuram: Oommen Chandy was accompanied throughout his last journey by a sea of people never seen before in Kerala. But leftist intellectual N E Sudheer has come to the fore by insulting the people who gathered for Oommen Chandy’s departure.
In his Facebook post, Sudheer has disparaged Oommen Chandy’s mourning journey. He insulted Oommen Chandy’s heartbroken followers and family members as well as the entire state of Kerala by describing the mourning procession as a “corpse street show”. Apart from that, Sudheer also criticised the media persons who followed Oommen Chandy’s mortal remains throughout.
This is how Sudheer’s Facebook post go:
“There were great crowds in all the streets through which the corpse procession passed. But it is a procession carrying a dead body, a rather unpleasant one. And media channels were competing with each other to cover and broadcast it live. We must bow down to the Malayalis who endured this. The body of a leader who set a good example by refusing official honors was dragged through the streets for days. I don’t know if Oommen Chandy would have liked this. I like to think he would not. We know how the mortal remains of Kodiyeri and Nayanar travelled through the streets for many hours. But EMS was cremated within hours in Thiruvananthapuram where he died. It was said that, If CPI leader Balaram died, he should be cremated in the nearby crematorium as soon as possible and that person from Pinarayi was buried the very next day at Shantikavadam in Thiruvananthapuram when he died. We must remember that there are examples like this also. From now at least, others should say that this should not be done. Family members should take a stand in this regard. It should be recognized that such street shows with dead bodies are not part of a civilized society. There is no need to prove that the deceased has a place in people’s hearts. Let there be no more funeral processions like this, which are likely to make it a festival for our insensible media channels.”
But it should be noted that in Sudhir’s Facebook post, he first said that “The dead body of a leader who set a good example by refusing official honors has been dragged on the streets for days.” Then he mentioned “the dead bodies of Kodiyeri and Nayanar” just below. The common public has questioned this insult by NE Sudheer with very strict and precise replies in that post itself. Some have pointed out that Sudheer is a cultural Vinayakan.
Many people have questioned Sudheer’s flawed thinking. He has repeatedly written corpse and corpse procession degrading the mortal remains of Oommen Chandy and his funeral procession in his FB post. Still, Sudheer is not ready to withdraw or correct that post. Many people from the general public, regardless of politics, are criticizing Sudheer and commenting on his Facebook post.
