Thiruvananthapuram: Amidst a persisting financial crunch in Kerala, the state government has made the tough decision to limit the distribution of Onam food kits this year. Only yellow ration cardholders, who belong to the economically backward section of society and are beneficiaries of the Antyodaya Anna Yojana, will receive the food kits on this occasion, according to the reports. Additionally, around 50,000 inmates from various welfare centres across the state will also be provided with these kits.
The civil supplies department has clarified that distributing food kits to all ration cardholders is not feasible at the moment due to a shortage of funds. Consequently, the distribution will be limited to approximately 5.87 lakh individuals who hold yellow ration cards. The government will incur an expense of about Rs 30 crore to carry out this restricted distribution. However, if all 35.52 lakh pink cardholders were to be considered, the expenditure on the food kits would soar to a staggering Rs 300 crore.
