THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As the Onam festival approaches in Kerala, there are concerns that the price of rice will experience a notable increase due to the negligence of the state government. Last week only the state’s food department finally issued a letter to the Food Corporation of India (FCI) requesting additional rice for the Onam festive season. However, this delay in communication is likely to result in a shortage of rice supply, impacting the special distribution of rice through ration shops during Onam.
Previously, during Onam, those without blue and white ration cards were provided with 5 kg of special rice. Unfortunately, this year, the negligence of the state food department has put the blame on the FCI for any potential rice shortage.
Adding to the concern is the ongoing financial crisis, which has further complicated the availability of rice in the market. The state’s indifference and delay in handling the demand letter to FCI, coupled with the scarcity of goods in Supplyco, have exacerbated the situation.
The repercussions of the delayed demand letter will be felt in the Onam market as well, as it is anticipated to drive up the price of rice. Rather than taking responsibility for their actions, the Kerala state food department appears to be attempting to shift the blame to the central government, claiming that the allocation from the center is inadequate.
