Thrissur: The bail plea of of Asst. Jail superintendent, an accused in the incident of supplying intoxicants to the inmates of the Viyyur Central Jail after taking money, has been rejected. The rejection pertains to his anticipatory bail application filed in response to the allegations. During a routine inspection carried out by jail officials on June 25, intoxicants such as beedi and hans were discovered to have been supplied to prisoners, leading to the initiation of the case against him. Ajumon hails from Kaladi, Ernakulam.
A stash of intoxicants, consisting of 12 packs of beedi and 12 bundles of hans, was discovered in close proximity to the prison’s kitchen block and cells. These illicit items were allegedly supplied by Ajumon, the Assistant Jail Superintendent, who reportedly accepted payments through Google Pay from prisoners’ relatives in exchange for delivering drugs.
The prisoners themselves informed another Assistant Superintendent, D.S. Rahul, about the illegal activities. Subsequently, the Superintendent of Viyyur Jail lodged a formal complaint at Viyyur Police Station, urging an inquiry into the matter. Following an investigation conducted by the jail superintendent, the inmates involved in procuring the banned substances expressed remorse and sought apology for their actions.
During the investigation, authorities obtained bank transfer records related to Ajumon’s Google Pay transactions. They discovered that Ajumon and the relatives of the accused were in frequent communication through specific phone numbers. Additionally, payments were made via Google Pay to two other phone numbers, which were in contact with the wives of the inmates. Ajumon was found to be regularly using these two numbers.
Based on these findings, a case was registered against Ajumon, making him the fifth accused in the matter. However, he went into hiding following the filing of the case. Despite his absence, Ajumon’s legal representatives submitted an anticipatory bail application in the District Sessions Court to get him bail in this case.
