THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: On Wednesday, the Kerala government granted approval to a progressive liquor policy aimed at promoting the production and sale of traditional liquor throughout the state. Additionally, the policy proposes to increase the manufacturing of foreign liquor, beer and traditional toddy within Kerala’s boundaries.
State Excise Minister MB Rajesh emphasized that the new liquor policy seeks to modernize the toddy preparation industry, recognizing toddy as a unique natural and traditional alcoholic beverage of Kerala. The government intends to enhance and update the toddy industry in the state to align with modern standards.
Moreover, the minister Rajesh pointed out that the new liquor policy also aims to bolster the state’s tourism industry. Kerala currently has only 309 outlets, whereas states like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu boast significantly higher numbers with 3980 and 6380 outlets, respectively.
Minister also questioned why toddy has not been branded as Kerala’s unique drink, unlike other states that promote their alcoholic products. He highlighted the potential benefits of branding toddy, such as generating more employment opportunities.
However, he acknowledged that promoting alcohol abstinence remains a priority for the state government. He emphasized that achieving this objective will require long-term strategies, and the government is committed to taking a realistic and pragmatic approach.
Regarding the nutritional content of toddy, the Minister admitted that he does not possess that information at the moment.
