THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Veteran Congress leader and former Mizoram Governor Vakkom Purushothaman passed away. He died at his residence in Thiruvananthapuram. He was 96 years old.
Vakkom Purushothaman was born on April 12, 1928, in Vakkom, Thiruvananthapuram district. He embarked on his political journey through the activities of the Students Congress.
In 1953, he became a member of Vakkom Panchayat. Later, he served as the president of Thiruvananthapuram DCC, as well as the general secretary and vice president of KPCC.
Vakkom Purushothaman was elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly from Attingal five times and served as a minister on three occasions. Throughout his political career, he held various portfolios, including Finance, Excise, Labour, Health, Agriculture, and Tourism departments.
In 1982, Vakkom was appointed as the Speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly for the first time. Additionally, he served as the Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands from 1993 to 1996.
Later, in 2011, he was appointed as the Governor of Mizoram. However, he resigned from the position in 2014 after relocating to Nagaland.
