MALAPPURAM: An investigation is underway into the custodial death of Thamir Jiffry (30), a resident of Tirurangadi, who died while in police custody at Tanur police station in Malappuram district. The incident occurred after he was taken into custody this morning, along with four others, on suspicion of possessing 18 grams of MDMA, a synthetic drug.
Malappuram SP Sujith Das stated that the Special Branch DySP will be conducting an inquiry into the procedural lapses surrounding the incident. The Crime Branch DySP will handle the investigation into the unnatural death, while the Narcotics DySP will look into the intoxication case.
Following the incident, a preliminary report has been submitted to the Chief Secretary and the DGP by SP Sujith Das. He also assured that the investigation will be conducted in accordance with the guidelines set by the Supreme Court.
After collapsing in custody, Jiffry was immediately taken to a nearby private hospital. Despite the efforts of the doctors, he was pronounced dead.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are taking the matter seriously to ensure a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding the custodial death.
