THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Today morning, a tragic boat accident again occurred at Muthalapozhi, involving a boat carrying 20 peoples that overturned. 16 people were successfully rescued, but two others are currently receiving medical treatment in a hospital. The people aboard the boat were natives of Varkala.
Under the leadership of Marine Enforcement, rescue operations are still ongoing. It’s worth noting that this incident follows a recent agreement between the government and Adani Group, concerning the harbor’s construction and the soil between the rocks. Unfortunately, the accident took place while the process of removing the soil was underway.
Fishermen had previously raised concerns about the construction of the harbor and the soil between the rocks, highlighting defects that needed attention. They argue that the government’s negligence is a major factor contributing to these continuous accidents.
In response to the incident, the state government advised fishermen to refrain from venturing into the sea to avoid further danger. However, this decision faced strong opposition from the Latin Sabha and local fishermen, who emphasized that not going fishing would severely impact their livelihoods in the region.
Due to the resolute objections, the government ultimately retracted its previous decision during the recent discussions. However, local fishermen have long been raising allegations against the state government, claiming that it has not taken sufficient action to address the ongoing accidents in the area.
The situation remains concerning, and further measures are required to prevent such tragedies in the future.
