THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Amidst several controversies, yet another boat accident has been reported today in Muthalapozhi. It is reported that the ‘St. Petres’ fishing boat, carrying four fishermen, overturned. The accident occurred while the boat was returning from the sea. All four of them managed to escape by swimming. The boat overturned in a strong tide. The individuals involved in the accident are currently receiving treatment in a hospital.
There have been several allegations that recent constructions carried out without proper scientific analysis have led to consequences such as frequent boat accidents. Just last week, a boat carrying 20 people overturned in the same region. Fortunately, all of them were rescued by Marine Enforcement cadets.
The fishermen had raised demands such as rectifying defects in the harbor construction and altering the soil between the rocks. Subsequently, an agreement was reached between the State government and the Adani Group.
Local fishermen allege that the negligence of the state government is a significant contributing factor to these recurring accidents. In response to this series of accidents, the state government advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea to prevent further danger. However, this decision encountered strong opposition from the Latin Sabha and local fishermen, who stressed that refraining from fishing would severely impact their livelihoods in the region.
The local fishermen claim that the negligence of the state government is a significant factor contributing to these ongoing accidents.
