Thiruvananthapuram: The High Court has sought an explanation from the government and the police on the plea submitted by the Nair Service Society (NSS) to cancel the case taken against its members for conducting a ‘Nama Japa Yatra’ or mantra chanting protest.
The NSS argued in court that it had taken permission from the Cantonment Police Station to hold the protest march. However, the government said that no permission was given from the station and that the march was conducted illegally.
The case will be considered again by the HC on Friday. The government told the court that till that time no further action will be taken.
NSS Vice President, M Sangeeth Kumar, had filed a petition in the High Court pointing out that the case registered by the police does not have legal standing and that it should be quashed. Sangeeth Kumar is the first accused in the case registered by the Cantonment Police against the Nama Japa Yatra by the NSS to protest against the anti-Hindu remarks of Speaker, AN Shamseer.
The NSS had taken out a Nama Japa Yatra or mantra chanting procession on Wednesday in Thiruvananthapuram against AN Shamseer’s anti-Hindu remarks. The police registered a case against Sangeeth Kumar and about thousand others who participated in the protest march for unlawful assembly.
