Thiruvananthapuram: K Surendran, the state president of Kerala BJP, has accused both ruling and opposition parties of exploiting the assembly for religious polarisation, following their joint resolution against the Uniform Civil Code. Notably, the Assembly had previously passed a resolution against the Citizenship Amendment Act and the abrogation of Article 370 in Kashmir. Surendran characterised this trend as a customary practise used to cater to specific sections of the population.
Surendran further contended that the CPI (M) and Congress are challenging the foundations of the country’s constitution and judicial system. He criticised Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan for introducing a resolution in the Assembly against the Uniform Civil Code, which, in his view, had not even been debated in Parliament. He asserted that both the LDF and UDF are neglecting the people’s interests by dedicating valuable legislative time to protesting against a law lacking a draft bill.
Highlighting the shifting stance of the CPI (M), Surendran pointed out that they had departed from the views of the late EMS Namboodiripad, who strongly advocated for a Uniform Civil Code. He suggested that the CPI (M) had succumbed to vote-bank politics. Similarly, he criticised the Congress for selectively addressing issues, accusing them of neglecting concerns related to Hindu sentiments while protesting against the Uniform Civil Code.
Surendran asserts that the alliance between Congress and CPI (M) in Kerala is being facilitated by certain Jihadi forces, forming a “C Cube” alliance (Congress-Communal-Communist). He predicted that this alignment would prompt significant protests not only from Hindus but also from secular-minded members of the Muslim community, particularly Muslim women, against what he characterised as religious biases.
