Thiruvananthapuram: The CPI(M) initiated its election drive, including in the online platforms, by personal attacks on late former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and his son, Chandy Oommen. However, the party has instructed its leaders and members to carry out their election campaign in Puthupally by focusing on developmental discussions and explaining government plans. This order stems from a proposal put forth during the CPI(M) state committee meeting.
Leaders should refrain from making personal insults. The CPI(M) asserts that if the UDF is relying solely on sentimentality following Oommen Chandy’s passing, then the CPI(M) is simply aiming to counter this on a political basis. Additionally, the CPI(M) holds the view that the accusations raised by local leaders concerning the treatment of Oommen Chandy will not be advantageous for the party.
At the same time, it is believed that the CPI(M)’s decision is due to the fear that personal attacks and insults will backfire on the party. They fear that this approach might impact not only the CPI(M) candidates in the Puthupally by-election but also those in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. Adopting a strategy of personal attacks could potentially harm the CPI(M) disproportionately. The CPI(M)’s decision not to insult individuals in elections is due to the fear that it would essentially provide ammunition for self-inflicted damage.
