Palakkad: Addressing the severe power shortage issue in the state, Power Minister K. Krishnankutty said that the government is poised to make a decision regarding procuring electricity from external sources in the near future. Moreover, the minister hinted at a potential rise in electricity rates.
The state is grappling with a dire shortage of electricity, attributed to factors such as insufficient water levels in dams and the delayed initiation of fresh tenders to replace the cancelled Power Purchase Agreement. Minister K. Krishnankutty highlighted that instructions had been issued to the board two months ago to explore the option of sourcing electricity externally.
The minister emphasised that the board is actively working to finalise this decision and also added that an elevated rate might become necessary with the acquisition of electricity from external providers. Minister Krishnankutty underscored the necessity of initiating hydropower projects as a crucial response to the ongoing crisis. He further revealed that these projects, once implemented, could potentially enable the export of surplus electricity.
