PALAKKAD: An incident has come to light involving a complaint regarding the administration of an alternate vaccine to a newborn. The incident took place at the primary health centre located in Pirayiri, where a complaint was lodged against the medical staff responsible.
Instead of receiving the appropriate Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG) injection, the health centre staff by mistaken administered the polio vaccine. The BCG vaccine is typically administered to infants and young children as a preventive measure against tuberculosis (TB) disease.
As a consequence of this incident, the baby is currently under the observation at the Palakkad district hospital.
The infant, belonging to a couple from Pallikulam, received the incorrect vaccine. Relatives of the baby have expressed their intention to file a complaint with the District Medical Officer (DMO) regarding the negligent conduct of the healthcare workers responsible for this incident.
The baby’s current health condition appears to be unaffected by any preexisting medical conditions.
