Kochi: Media reported that CPI(M) leader EP Jayarajan insulted freedom fighter, VD Savarkar, during a program conducted by DYFI called ‘Secular Street’ as part of Independence Day celebration.
Jayarajan, who is also the convener of the Left Democratic Front in Kerala, said that Savarkar was a radical left adventurer during the freedom struggle. He was arrested and sent to Andaman Cellular Jail by the British for his activities. The communist leader said that Savarkar was not able to get out of prison under the rule of the British army.
EP Jayarajan added that at that time the Hindu Mahasabha approached him and advised him to write a clemency petition to the British. In his petition he said that he will not participate in the freedom struggle and will remain as a servant of the British.
He also said that Savarkar became associated with the RSS after being released from prison and became a fascist and tried to destroy the secular and democratic character of India. Jayarajan accused Savarkar of being a communal and criticized the BJP government for inaugurating the new Parliament building on his birth anniversary.
EP Jayarajan is a veteran communist leader and former Minister. He resigned from the Pinarayi Vijayan led government after being accused of nepotism. He was alleged to have appointed his family members as heads of public sector undertakings in the State.
The left has tried to erase the great struggle of Veer Savarkar for the freedom struggle. However VD Savarkar’s illustrious life and the opinions of other freedom fighters during that time have made it very difficult for left intellectuals to completely tarnish his image.
Through the claim that Savarkar was a leftist adventurer during his early days, before the British arrested him, the leftist camp is trying to appropriate Veer Savarkar’s service to the nation after their attempts to degrade him for decades failed.
