IDUKKI: A 12-hour hartal has been declared in the district of Idukki, demanding for the resolution of pertinent land-related issues. Demands encompass a spectrum of issues, including the revocation of the construction ban affecting 13 panchayats under the purview of the Disaster Management Act. Additionally, appeals for the amendment of land use regulations, measures to mitigate disturbances to wildlife, and interventions to curb the escalation of prices have been prominently advocated as part of this hartal.
Reports indicate that protest marches will be staged at multiple locations throughout the district until 6 pm today. Owing to the hartal, scheduled school examinations for today have been postponed to August 25. Similarly, Mahatma Gandhi University has rescheduled all examinations slated for today to Saturday.
While the traders association has made it abundantly clear that shops will remain open despite the hartal, they have articulated their intention to do so by abstaining from participating in the shutdown. The association argues that the disruption caused by the hartal could severely impact the forthcoming Onam season, significantly affecting trade.
