THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a recent revelation, Swapna Suresh disclosed that dragging journalist Anil Nambiar’s name into the gold smuggling case was part of a hidden agenda pursued by certain individuals. Swapna shared this during her appearance on Janam TV’s program ‘Marupadi’.
During the program, Swapna explained that Janam TV journalist Anil Nambiar had once contacted her via phone, sparking a subsequent controversy. She clarified that Anil Nambiar had only reached out to her exclusively to analyze the authenticity of the news surrounding the gold smuggling case, given her affiliation with the UAE consulate. In their phone conversation, Anil Nambiar had inquired about the genuineness of the news.
Swapna further elaborated, saying, “Likewise, other media personnel also reached out to me. They all wanted to confirm the accuracy of the gold smuggling news. The influx of calls from journalists began after PRO Sarith was apprehended by customs.”
While acknowledging Sarith’s role in establishing the news’s legitimacy, Swapna noted that news journalists had started approaching her during Sarith’s custody to verify and seek confirmation. She highlighted the brevity of her conversation with Anil Nambiar, stating, “The call from Anil was brief. Unfortunately, several controversies emerged due to this.”
Later on, Swapna received instructions from her consul general to demand the withdrawal of any news related to this matter if journalists contacted her. She was also advised against airing news that could potentially be detrimental to the UAE Consulate General.
Following these directives, Swapna reached out to Anil Nambiar as instructed by the Consul General. However, Anil Nambiar responded by suggesting that the Consul General issue a statement first, and only then would they report. Anil also expressed interest in arranging an interview with the Consul General, though the logistics proved unfeasible due to the requirement for permission from the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, compounded by the fact that it was a Sunday. This marked the extent of the conversation between Swapna and Anil Nambiar.
Subsequently, after her arrest, Swapna was compelled into providing a written statement asserting that Janam TV journalist Anil Nambiar had contacted her by phone to deny her involvement with the diplomatic baggage. She clarified that Anil had never made such a request and that their conversation exclusively revolved around confirming the authenticity of news.
During interrogation, customs officers showed Swapna a photo of Anil Nambiar on a phone and inquired about their communication. Swapna clarified that Anil had reached out solely for the official verification of news. She accused customs officers Padmarajan and Krishna Kumar of pressuring her to include Anil Nambiar’s name in the statement.
Swapna added, “They even resorted to verbal abuse and threats against my ex-husband and daughter, compelling me to falsely implicate Anil. It pains me deeply to fabricate allegations against someone entirely uninvolved in this matter.”
Swapna vehemently denied that she had received advice from Anil Nambiar, emphasizing that she had only followed the guidance of M. Sivasankar, the Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister. She revealed that, during the ongoing case, she had intended to surrender to customs, but it was Sivasankar who advised her to go into hiding instead. Reflecting on this decision, Swapna expressed regret, believing that her compliance with Sivasankar’s advice had exacerbated her predicament.
All of these revelations were made during the television program, shedding light on the fact that Anil Nambiar’s involvement in the case was part of a hidden agenda, and subsequently, everything was manipulated as part of a propaganda effort.
