THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has come under scrutiny for its alleged improper handling of a situation involving a CPI(M) leader’s vehicle, which had been seized for illegally dumping sewage waste on the National Highway Bypass.
On August 27th, a special squad took possession of an auto owned by a CPI(M) leader from Vallakadavu. However, this situation took a turn when Gayathri Babu, the Chairperson of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation Health Department Standing Committee, intervened and facilitated the release of the vehicle.
It is claimed that CPI(M) leaders resorted to threats against the officials who had impounded the vehicle. Initially, Gayathri Babu suggested that the vehicle be released with only a nominal penalty. However, the Health inspector and his team held their ground, insisting on imposing the appropriate penalty as dictated by the rules.
Subsequently, several CPI(M) leaders exerted pressure and resorted to threats to compel the release of the vehicle, ultimately leading the officials to release it without imposing any penalty.
It is noteworthy that the High Court had previously issued an order explicitly stating that vehicles seized in such cases should not be released without obtaining the court’s permission. Despite this directive, Standing Committee Chairperson Gayathri Babu intervened and facilitated the release of the vehicle.
Frequent complaints have been raised regarding the alleged interference of CPI(M) leaders, which has purportedly hindered the proper functioning of Corporation officials.
