Ernakulam: Veteran theatre and film actor Varghese Kattiparampan, aged 88, passed away at Kannankulangara on Thripunithura Vaikom Road. He was the son of Joseph from Muhamma, Alappuzha, and Maryam Kattiparambil. Varghese was once a celebrated actor, renowned for his portrayal of hero roles in both films and plays. He was often affectionately referred to as ‘Sathyan on stage’ in theatres due to his striking resemblance to the movie star Sathyan. In the movie industry, he was known by the name Prasad.
Varghese Kattiparamban made his film debut as Prasad in the hit film ‘Anathashilpaman,’ released in 1971. His co-star in ‘Anathashilpaman’ was Saraswati, while Sheela played the role of his heroine in the movie ‘Sumangali.’ Ragini and Jayabharathi were his heroines in the movie ‘Lakshya.’ However, after that, he withdrew from active participation in the film industry.
In 1954, Varghese Kattiparamban entered the theatre as the hero in Navodaya Kalasamithi’s production of ‘Nashikatha Bhumi’. He then acted as a hero for numerous troupes in Kerala, including Kairali Theatres, People Theatres, Vaikom Malavika, Angamaly Pournami, Angamali Manishada, Kottayam Kerala, Kottayam National, Changanassery Geetha, and Kayamkulam Peoples. He was also a regular presence in Akashavani dramas. He was also an A-grade artist. He has received many honours, including the Guru Pooja Award of the State Sangeetha Nataka Akademi for his comprehensive contribution.
