Idukki: Dam safety officers are conducting a security check at the Idukki Dam. There was a report of a security breach that happened on July 22. The safety check is done at the Cheruthoni dam shutters, from which water is released from the Idukki dam.
A resident of Ottapalam entered the dam site and locked the base of the high mast light. A substance was also poured on the shutter rope. A look-out notice will be issued against the culprit.
The security check is conducted on the two of the shutters of the Idukki dam. Two more shutters have been opened. In total four shutters have been opened. Water will not flow out even if the shutters are open because the reservoir is filled with only 31% of its capacity.
It is believed that the suspect had left for a gulf country. His relatives and friends said that accused had undergone treatment for delusional disorder, said a report. The police suspect that the liquid poured on the rope was sanitizer. However, it is surprising that the youth could enter the area with eleven locks without being detected on the metal detectors placed there.
A report said that the police are also checking of a possibility of someone misusing the suspect to commit such an act.
Idukki dam is one of the highest arch dams in Asia, standing at 168.91 meters. This dam was constructed along with two other dams, that are Cheruthoni dam and Kulamavu dam. All the three dams are part of the Idukki Hydroelectric Project and were commissioned in 1976.
