Thiruvananthapuram: The state is again the grip of fear after reports came of two deaths due to suspected Nipah virus. In 2018, the Nipah virus struck Kozhikode resulting in the deaths of seventeen people out of the eighteen people that were confirmed with the disease. Nipah had struck in 2019 and also in 20211 but was not able to wreck the havoc caused in 2018.
However, the recurring of the deadly disease is causing concern among the population.
BJP State Vice President, Sobha Surendran, in a press meeting said that the Thiruvananthapuram Virology Lab is not functional. Sobha Surendran said that even after the state faced crisis like Nipah virus, the state is not utilizing the Virology Lab allowed by the central government. The state is also not utilizing the funds given by the central government.
Sobha Surendran also remarked that the Health Minister must say which were that lands that were earmarked for AIIMS are.
Surendran asked why AIIMS is being delayed by the state government. She demanded that Veena George must answer where those lands are.
Speaking about the state of government hospitals in Kerala, she asked what was the ratio of doctors in Taluk Hospitals.
The BJP leader said that health services are not being given as per the people’s needs. The prime example is the case of Harshina, who had to face lapse from the side of doctors. Harshina had a scissor lodged in her stomach after she was operated at the Kozhikode Medical College.
Sobha Surendran said that efforts to contain an epidemic must not begin after people die. The government has failed to prevent attacks of stray dogs. Even waste management is not done properly.
The BJP leader also accused Health Minsiter, Veena George, of destroying the government health sector in collusion with private sector.
