Idukki: Padayappa, the wild tusker, once again ventured into the inhabited area within the Munnar Lokad estate, causing quite a stir. The elephant approached Layams and launched an attack on a local ration shop, alarming the residents. Eyewitnesses reported that Padayappa forcefully pulled rice sacks out of the shop before the community mobilized to drive the elephant away.
For several tense hours, Padayappa created a state of panic before eventually retreating to the nearby forest around 7 o’clock in the evening. Forest Department officials promptly arrived at the scene to monitor Padayappa’s movements as he remained stationed in the vicinity.
Padayappa had previously been spotted in the Marayoor region, where reports of crop destruction attributed to the elephant’s attacks had also surfaced. There are concerns that the elephant may continue to pose a threat in the inhabited areas, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of the residents.
