New Delhi: A day before Supreme Court will hear the contempt of court against Rahul Gandhi for saying that the apex court said “chowkidar chor hai”, the Gandhi scion has said that he regretted saying it.

The Defence Minister said that by this the Congress President has lost his credibility. She said , “Rahul Gandhi’s credibility has taken a beating. People in public life generously go on saying untruth. It is a matter of grief to repeat the untruth.”

She added, “I feel sorry that the president of a national party like the Congress depends only on falsehood.”

Rahul Gandhi expressed regret over his own remark where he had claimed that the apex court while giving an order on the admissibility of three documents in Rafale fighter jet deal had said that “Chowkidar chor hai”.

A contempt plea was filed by BJP leader, Meenakshi Lekhi, against Rahul Gandhi for saying that the court accepted that Chowkidar is a thief while referring to the Prime Minister. The petition said that Rahul Gandhi put words in the Supreme Court’s order which the apex court has not made.

On 15 April Supreme Court sought explanation from Rahul Gandhi before 22 April and said that it will hear the matter on 23 April. The Congress President’s regret comes a day before the hearing.

Rahul Gandhi while expressing his regret for his remark said that his statement were “used and misused” by the political opponents and said that it was said in the heat of the moment of political campaigning.
