Kozhikode: Health Minister Veena George has confirmed that there have been no new cases of the Nipah virus reported in Kozhikode as of Saturday. During a press briefing, she revealed that 11 samples, collected from individuals, including those considered at high risk, have tested negative for the virus.
Kerala had reported six Nipah cases, including two fatalities, up until Friday. Currently, 21 individuals remain in isolation at Kozhikode Government Medical College, with four undergoing treatment.
The minister explained, “Medical boards have been established in hospitals treating Nipah patients. According to the assessments conducted by these boards, all patients are in stable condition. Doctors have reported that the health of a child receiving ventilator support is improving.”
The health department has been diligently tracing individuals who had contact with the Cheruvannur resident who tested positive for Nipah on Friday.
“The private hospital where the deceased Maruthonkara resident was admitted had initially collected his throat swab for influenza testing. Subsequently, the health department sent this sample for Nipah testing. On Friday, the National Institute of Virology confirmed the Nipah infection through the test results,” Minister stated.
Meanwhile, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has decided to acquire an additional 20 doses of monoclonal antibodies from Australia. In New Delhi, ICMR Director General Rajeev Bahl announced this decision, highlighting the significantly higher mortality rate associated with Nipah (ranging from 40 to 70 percent) compared to the 2-3 percent mortality rate observed in COVID-19.
