THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Actor Dhyan Sreenivasan criticised actor Alencier Ley Lopez for his misogynistic remarks made during the 53rd Kerala State Film Awards 2022 function held last Thursday (September 14) at Nishagandhi Auditorium, Thiruvananthapuram.
Actor Dhyan Sreenivasan responded while attending a promotion program for his movie, stating that he does not have any personal conflict of interest with Alencier Ley Lopez. However, he strongly opposes Alencier’s controversial remark. Dhyan added that if Alencier holds such an opinion, he should not attend such functions; he may choose to boycott the function. Dhyan clarified that his conflict of interest lies solely with Alencier’s misogynistic remark.
Later, when asked why no action was taken against the misogynistic remarks, Dhyan said that although Alencier made the controversial speech at the Kerala state government’s film festival ceremony, where state ministers, including the Chief Minister and other ministers, were also present, the government is responsible for taking action.
The incident leading to the controversy took place on September 14, when Alencier received the Special Jury Award from Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, and he said on stage, ‘I have a request. Do not tempt us by presenting a trophy modeled on a woman. We have a Chief Minister who is a role model for masculine strength, so we should be awarded a trophy that showcases the strength of a man.”
Soon after the actor’s speech went viral, several actors expressed their disagreement with Alencier’s misogynistic remarks.
Actor Hareesh Peradi vehemently criticized Alencier Lopez. Hareesh Peradi wrote on his Facebook that finding temptation when looking at a female award-winning statue is a sign of acute mental illness and requires treatment.
Hareesh Peradi added that despite political differences, this does not reflect Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s perspective. He urged the government to withdraw Alencier’s award due to this anti-woman remark. He emphasized that even though Alencier is a left-leaning individual, the government should not turn a blind eye to such a sexist remark.
Meanwhile, despite several controversies arising, Alencier refused to apologise for his sexist remark at the function.
