Thiruvananthapuram: ‘Acting Samrat’ Madhu of the Malayalam film industry has turned ninety. He has acted in about four hundred films. Other than being an actor, he is also a director, producer, film studio owner and a teacher. He has directed 12 films and produced 15 films. Madhu whose real name is Madhavan Nair was the owner of Uma film studio.
In 2013, the country honored him with the Padma Shri. Chemmeen starring Madhu won the President’s Gold Medal in 1965.
Madhu was born on September 23, 1933 to the former Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram, Parameswaran Pillai hailing from Thuckalay, Padmanabhapuram and Thankamma, a homemaker.
Madhu graduated in Hindi from University College, Thiruvananthapuram and did his post graduation from Banaras Hindu University. He worked as a Lecturer in South Travancore Hindu College and Scott Christian College, Nagercoil. Meanwhile, he joined the National School of Drama.
In 1963, he made his debut as a soldier in NN Pisharadi’s film ‘Ninamaninja Kalpadukal’. Later he acted in around 400 films like Chemmeen, Bhargaveenilayam and Swayamvaram. He acted in the Hindi film ‘Saath Hindustani’. He also acted in the Tamil movie ‘Oru Ponnu Oru Payyan’.
A celebration to honour Madhu who is celebrating Navati (ninety years) is organised under the name, ‘Madhumozhi: Akhoshapoorvam, Ithisaparvvam’ (‘മധുമൊഴി: ആഘോഷപൂര്വ്വം ഇതിഹാസപര്വ്വം’) at Nishagandhi Auditorium, Thiruvananthapuram. This program is organised under the auspice of Thiruvananthapuram film fraternity. Many celebrities including superstar Mohanlal will attend the function.
