Thiruvananthapuram: The INDI Alliance of all the opposition parties, put together to face a formidable BJP in the upcoming General Elections, has not been able to achieve a consensus on many issues and the parties within the alliance are opposing each other in many states across Bharat. In Kerala too the situation is the same. Adding to these woes, one of the INDI Alliance partners, the CPI, has now decided to ask Congress leader, Rahul Gandhi, not to contest from Wayanad constituency in the Lok Sabha elections.
A report said that the decision to this effect was taken at a national leadership meet of the CPI and its decision will be officially conveyed to the Congress leadership, said the report.
The report adds that the CPI says it wants the Congress to contest against a BJP candidate. The communist party has been contesting the Wayanad seat since 2009. Every time the party lost to the Congress candidate and the last time, Rahul Gandhi, won from the constituency with a margin of 4.31 lakh votes, thanks to the strong support from Muslim League and other UDF partners.
This time over, the CPI thinks that as they are part of the INDI Alliance, the Congress will let them contest from the seat and Rahul Gandhi will seek new pastures elsewhere.
According to the report, the Congress leaders have been quick to rubbish CPI’s request. KPCC President, K Sudhakaran, an alliance partner cannot decide on other parties’ decisions and stressed that Rahul Gandhi will contest from Wayanad itself.
Also, AICC General Secretary, KC Venugopal said that the decision on who will contest will be taken by the party’s election committee.
