THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The National Intelligence Agency (NIA) has submitted a charge sheet in the Elathur train arson case, shedding light on significant developments. According to the charge sheet, the prime accused, Shahrukh Saifi (27), was motivated by an extreme terrorist ideology, and the act is being described as an act of ‘Jihad.’
The NIA’s investigation revealed that Shahrukh Saifi committed the crime under the influence of extremist religious preachers from Pakistan, who had reached out to him through social media channels.
Hailing from Delhi, Shahrukh Saifi deliberately chose Kerala as the location for his criminal act, aiming to remain anonymous after the attack. The charge sheet further indicates that his plan was to return home after sowing panic among the people.
The incident occurred on April 2, 2023, when coach number D1 of the Alappuzha-Kannur Express near Elathur railway station in Kozhikode district was set on fire.
