Malappuram: MP AM Arif lent his support to KT Jaleel against the ‘Hijab’ remarks of CPI(M) leader K Anil Kumar. By sharing KT Jaleel’s Facebook post, the MP made it clear that he stands in opposition to Anil Kumar’s view on the matter.
Jaleel’s criticism, without mentioning Anil Kumar’s name, was that one person’s mistake should not be seen as the party’s stance. Jaleel wrote on Facebook that not wearing a Hijab does not symbolize progress and the Communist Party has not made any Muslim girl to abandon Hijab in Kerala. It was this post by Jaleel that AM Arif had shared.
Political leaders and public servants should refrain from responding solely to the emotional issues of specific groups and should instead rely on their clear judgment and conscience. Having personal opinions is entirely acceptable, but one must exercise caution to avoid making remarks that suggest, even sarcastically, that their personal observations reflect the official stance of their affiliated political party. Otherwise, such statements could be readily exploited by communal and political enemies, noted Jaleel.
Anil Kumar made these remarks during an atheist conference in Thiruvananthapuram. Anil Kumar’s remark was that CPI(M) has always stood with women’s progressive ideas and it was CPI(M) that inspired some women to abandon Hijab in Malappuram. Many including Muslim organizations have come forward against these remarks of CPI(M) leader.
