THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Samastha, a Muslim scholar body, has criticised CPI(M) for the statement made by CPI(M) leader Adv. Anil Kumar regarding the hijab.
Abdussamad Pookkottur, a leader of Samastha, vehemently condemned Adv. Anil Kumar’s statement on the hijab. Pookkottur emphasized that the hijab is a matter of faith and that the Communist Party does not have the right to advocate for its abandonment.
He pointed out that communism is fundamentally rooted in the denial of religion, and therefore, the party should refrain from discussing matters related to the hijab. Pookkottur stressed that the abandonment of the hijab does not signify women’s progressiveness.
Pookkottur also expressed concerns that, in the future, the Communist Party might attempt to justify Adv. Anil Kumar’s statement as a personal opinion for the sake of vote bank. However, he argued that the statement reflects the CPI(M)’s stance on the issue.
Abdussamad Pookkottur accused the party, asserting that a responsible leader like Anil Kumar’s statement did not merely represent his personal opinion, given his explicit reference to the ‘Communist’ party in his statement.
CPI(M) leader Adv. K Anil Kumar made a statement during his participation in the Litmus-23 conference organized by esSENSE Global at Nishagandhi Auditorium in Thiruvananthapuram on October 1. Anil Kumar claimed that the Communist Party had influenced Muslim girls in Kerala’s Malappuram district to abandon the hijab, presenting it as a sign of progress among Muslim women attributed to the party’s influence.
This statement has now sparked controversy.
Following this, senior left-wing leaders criticised Anil Kumar’s hijab statement.
Meanwhile, leaders from the BJP and Yuva Morcha in Kerala exposed the CPI(M)’s dual stance on the ideology of secularism.
