Hangzhou: Several prominent athletes from Kerala are choosing to leave the state showing a wave of protest against the government after feeling neglected by the state government. Following badminton star Prannoy, international athletes Eldos Paul and Abdullah Abubakar have announced their departure from the state and have decided not to represent Kerala in the upcoming National Games in Goa.
Expressing their discontent, the athletes cited a lack of recognition and support from the government despite their notable achievements. Eldos Paul and Abdullah Abubakar, who secured gold in the individual event at the Commonwealth Games, claimed to have received no congratulatory messages from the government. Feeling neglected, the triple jump stars are opting to seek better opportunities elsewhere.
One of the key issues highlighted by these athletes is the necessity of going to other states for financial assistance if they wish to prepare adequately for prestigious events like the Olympics. Eldos Paul clarified that he plans to obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the state athletic association and relocate to either Odisha or Tamil Nadu for better support.
Asian Games bronze medalist Jinson Johnson has also expressed a sentiment of neglect, sharing his own experience of feeling overlooked by Kerala’s authorities after achieving success. Johnson emphasised that the lack of support could prompt more athletes to leave Kerala.
