Ernakulam: Indian hockey player PR Sreejesh has expressed disappointment over the lack of recognition and support from the state government and local authorities upon his return to Ernakulam after clinching the gold medal in hockey at the Asian Games 2023.
Despite the remarkable achievement of winning gold and securing direct qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics, Sreejesh revealed that he received congratulations from only one notable figure: Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose. The Governor personally visited Sreejesh’s home to extend his greetings.
Sreejesh expressed his dismay, stating that it has been three or four days since his return, and not a single communication or a visit has come from the state government or from the local Panchayat members.
The disregard we are experiencing is a lesson for the upcoming generation. Consider the potential discouragement they might feel when reflecting on the idea that, winning an Asian Games medal doesn’t hold significant value in the state. said Sreejesh
Gold medalists in the Asian Games 2023 received a reward of Rs 3 crore from the Haryana government. Likewise, when Amit Rohidas recently met with Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, the Chief Minister presented him with a monetary incentive. Sreejesh mentioned that such gestures serve as a source of motivation for them.
With an excellent performance during the Asian Games final, India defeated Japan by a resounding 5-1, with Sreejesh’s exceptional goalkeeping skills contributing significantly to the victory. The gold medal not only brought pride to the nation but also secured direct qualification for the Indian men’s hockey team for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
