Thiruvananthapuram: Despite a severe economic crisis and insufficient funds in the state exchequer, the government of Kerala is set to amplify the lavishness of the Keraleeyam program. The government has allocated a budget of Rs. 27.12 crore for the week-long Keraleeyam programme, scheduled to take place in Thiruvananthapuram starting from November 1. Despite the shortage of funds in the state exchequer, the finance department has issued an order sanctioning this significant amount.
A substantial portion of this budget, approximately Rs. 10 crore, has been allocated for the exhibition alone, highlighting a striking display of government extravagance in a state where financial constraints are prevalent.
The Keraleeyam programme encompasses a diverse range of activities, including seminars, exhibitions, trade fairs, food festivals, book festivals, cultural events, flower shows, street performances, and cultural showcases. Specifically, Rs. 9.39 crore has been earmarked for the exhibition, Rs. 2.97 crore for lighting decorations, Rs. 3.14 crores for cultural programmes, and Rs. 7.77 crore for various celebration committees.
Fifteen main committees and sub-committees have been granted the discretion to spend these funds as they see fit, even allowing for the utilization of funds in advance. Meanwhile, the opposition is voicing its intent to boycott the programme, alleging that the government is channeling funds into the LDF’s pre-Lok Sabha election campaign, further fanning the flames of this fiscal controversy.
